How much energy does Waterloo Wind Farm produce?
Waterloo Wind Farm has capacity to generate 130 megawatts (MW) of clean, emission free energy. This is enough electricity to power 59,000 homes.
Why build wind instead of solar?
The natural wind resources at Waterloo are highly suited to generating electricity. Wind energy is also a more advanced form of energy generation technology than large-scale solar, which makes it more cost effective to develop and more efficient to run.
How do wind turbines work?
Blades on a wind turbine spin in the wind, which in turn drives a rotor. The spinning blades create mechanical or kinetic energy which is converted into electricity and fed into the grid.
How fast does the wind need to be blowing for turbines to work?
The turbines will work at minimum wind speeds of 5m per second (around 18km an hour).
Are wind farms noisy?
No. Wind turbines are highly efficient in creating energy using simple mechanical components and the power of the wind. Blades are aerodynamically designed to move through the air with as little resistance as possible. This means that turbines are very quiet, particularly when compared to the noise of the wind itself.
What happens to wind farms once they finish operating?
Wind farms have an average life expectancy of 25 years – most will operate longer than this. At the end of its useful life, Waterloo Wind Farm will be decommissioned and the site restored to its original condition. This includes all associated surrounding infrastructure.
How do I know if I am getting wind power in my energy supply?
With governments requiring energy retailers to source a portion of their power supplies from renewable energy sources like wind, it’s possible your day to day electricity use includes power from the wind. Given the nature of the energy supply system, it’s not possible to tell exactly where your power is coming from. If you want to make sure you are using renewable energy, you can request a green energy plan from your energy retailer.
Who owns Waterloo Wind Farm?
Waterloo Wind Farm is owned by Palisade Investment Partners and Northleaf Capital. The site is operated by Palisade Integrated Management Services.
